Overview

Sphingomyelin, a major cell membrane component, is highly concentrated in nerve cell myelin sheaths and red blood cells. Once thought to be purely structural, it is now known to interact with cholesterol, forming lipid rafts that regulate protein signaling and localization. Additionally, sphingomyelin is a precursor to ceramides and other sphingolipids in the sphingomyelin cycle.
