SPHINGOMYELIN Usage And Synthesis

Uses	sphingomyelin can be used as an amphiphilic liposome component in the manufacture of the liposome capsule.
Uses	Sphingomyelin is a type of sphingolipid found in cell membranes especially in myelin sheaths covering nerve cell axons.
Definition	Diaminophosphatides occur- ring primarily in nervous tissue and containing a fatty acid, phosphoric acid, choline, and sphingo- sine. They are soluble in hot absolute alcohol and insoluble in ether, acetone, and water.
General Description	Sphingomyelin (SM) is a principal sphingolipid in mammalian cell membranes. Its biological functions have been studied.
Biochem/physiol Actions	Sphingomyelin is the second most abundant lipid and major sphingolipid component of HDL and the plasma membrane. It forms cholesterol-enriched lipid rafts. It has a key role in the availability of plasma membrane-free cholesterol.
