Am. Chem. Soc., 70, 48 (1948), a solution containing 3.77 g. of 1-dimethylamino-2-propanol and 10 ml. of chloroform was cooled with stirring to a temperature of about 0° C. A solution of 5.72 g. of freshly distilled thionylchloride in 2 ml. of chloroform was added thereto. The reaction mixture was allowed to come to ambient temperature over a period of about 30 minutes and was then heated to refluxing temperature for an additional 30 minutes. The precipitated material redissolved on heating. 1-Dimethylamino-2-chloropropane hydrochloride began to crystallize from the boiling solvent. The reaction mixture was cooled, diluted with ether and filtered. The reaction product comprising 1-dimethylamino-2-chloropropane hydrochloride weighed about 5.5 g. (95 percent yield). Recrystallization yielded purified 1-dimethylamino-2-chloropropane hydrochloride melting at 192°-194° C. |
