In organic synthesis, it serves as an intermediate in various reactions like condensation, rearrangement and ring-opening. Further, it finds use in agrochemicals, pharmaceuticals, colorants, aroma chemicals, detergents and biodiesel. It acts as a catalyst in polymerization and isomerization reactions.
