UsesN,N-Dimethyl-p-phenylenediamine is a redox indicator. Readily forms stable, red radical cation, involved in a variety of redox reactions.
UsesN,N-Dimethyl-p-phenylenediamine may be used for the preparation of molecular compounds with tetracyano-p-quinodimethane (TCNQ). Polarized absorption spectra of these molecular compounds were investigated.

General DescriptionColorless to reddish-violet solid. Used in the production of methylene blue and photographic developer. Used as a chemical intermediate for dyes and diazonium chloride salts and as an analytical reagent to detect chloroamine in water.
Reactivity ProfileN,N-Dimethyl-1,4-phenylenediamine neutralizes acids in exothermic reactions to form salts plus water. May be incompatible with isocyanates, halogenated organics, peroxides, phenols (acidic), epoxides, anhydrides, and acid halides. Flammable gaseous hydrogen may be generated in combination with strong reducing agents, such as hydrides. Incompatible with strong oxidizers, strong acids and acid anhydrides. Also incompatible with alkalis .
HazardToxic by ingestion or inhalation of vapor.
Health HazardLowest toxic dose with skin effect is 14 mg/kg. Irritant to skin and eyes.
Fire HazardWhen heated to decomposition, N,N-Dimethyl-1,4-phenylenediamine emits toxic fumes of nitrogen oxides.
