It is used as a formylating agent and used in the preparation of anti-poxvirus agents. It is used in Staudinger reaction and Hundsdiecker-barton iododecarboxylation reaction. It is widely used for studying organic photosensitizers, which finds application in dye-sensitized solar cells.
