UsesIron(III) sulphate finds uses as a mordant and in the preparation of iron(III) alum and Prussian blue.
UsesIron(III) sulfate is also used in pigments, pickling baths for aluminum and steel. It acts as a mordant in dyeing, as a coagulant for industrial wastes. In the medical field, it is used as an astringent and styptic. It is involved in the preparation of aromatic esters from the corresponding acids and alcohols. Further, it is employed in the oxidation of pyrite.
UsesIron(III) sulfate hydrate is a general use reagent qualified for use in plant research. It is redox active and my be used as a cell culture nutrient, in studies on iron metabolism or regulation and oxidative processes.
PreparationAnhydrous Fe2(SO4)3 is obtained as an almost white powder by boiling anhydrous iron(II) sulphate with concentrated sulphuric acid or by careful heating of the hydrated salt. Solutions of iron(III) sulphate prepared, for example, by oxidizing solutions of iron(II) sulphate with nitric acid yield a series of hydrates upon crystallization; the common hydrates have 12, 9 (the common, violet crystals), 6 and 3 molecules of water. When thermally decomposed, iron (III) oxide and sulphur trioxide are formed : Fe2(SO4)3→Fe2O3+3SO3
