LAURIC ACID SODIUM SALT Usage And Synthesis

Chemical Properties	slightly yellow powder
Uses	Sodium Laurate is the sodium salt of lauric acid. It functions as a binder, emulsifier, and anticaking agent.
Uses	Sodium dodecanoate (sodium laurate) is used in cholloidal chemistry as a nonionic surfactant.
Definition	ChEBI: An organic sodium salt resulting from the replacement of the proton from the carboxy group of dodecanoic acid by a sodium ion.
Purification Methods	Neutralise it by adding a slight excess of dodecanoic acid and removing it by ether extraction. The salt is recrystallised from the aqueous solution by adding pure Me2CO and repeating the process (see sodium decanoate). It has also been recrystallised from MeOH. [Beilstein 2 IV 1085.]
