MSDS Information
TRANS-CHLORDANE Usage And Synthesis
Chemical PropertiesColorless to amber, solid or very viscous, noncombustible liquid which may impart a chlorinelike, irritating odor
UsesInsecticide
Environmental FateGroundwater. According to the U.S. EPA (1986) cis-chlordane has a high potential to leach to groundwater. Photolytic. Irradiation of cis-chlordane by a 450-W high-pressure mercury lamp gave photo-cis-chlordane (Ivie et al., 1972). Chemical/Physical. In an alkaline medium or solvent, carrier, diluent or emulsifier having an alkaline reaction, chlorine will be released (Windholz et al., 1983). Based on a reported hydrolysis half-life of >197,000 years at 25°C and pH 7 (Ellington et al., 1988), chemical hydrolysis is not expected to be an environmentally relevant fate process (Lyman et al., 1982). Emits very toxic fumes of chlorides when heated to decomposition (Lewis, 1990).
