Sodium pantoate is a biosynthetic intermediate. Sodium pantoate is generated via hydroxymethylation of α-ketoisovalerate followed by reduction. Sodium pantoate combines with β-alanine via an amide bond to form pantothenic acid. Pantothenic acid has important biological significance.
