Overview

Once considered purely structural, it is now recognized for its strong affinity for cholesterol, forming tightly packed lipid rafts. These rafts act as signaling platforms, regulating protein localization and interactions. Additionally, sphingomyelin is a precursor to ceramides and other sphingolipids in the sphingomyelin cycle.
