Overview

9CCN is a cholesterol ester and oxidized anionic lipid found intracellularly in plaque macrophages and extracellularly in atherosclerotic lesions, where it is an "eat-me" signal to promote the phagocytic clearance of apoptotic debris. It has been utilized in the development of lipid nanoparticles (LNPs) for delivering antagomiRs—chemically modified oligonucleotides targeting specific miRNAs—to macrophages both in vitro and in vivo.
