Overview

Introduction Derived from Salicylic acid, present in willow bark infusions used for centuries for their antipyretic & analgesics properties, Acetylsalicylic acid [ASA] was first synthesized 170 years ago. Acetylsalicylic acid reduces prostaglandin production in the hypothalamus, the body’s control center (antipyretic). It also prevents hormones from producing the messages captured by brain’s pain receptors (analgesic). Acetylsalicylic acid has proven having less undesirable side effects than salicylic acid or other salicylic acid derivatives such as sodium salicylate & phenyl salicylate [salol]. Acetylsalicylic acid is often considered as a “wonder drug”, for it is also widely used as an inhibitor of cyclo-oxygenase, the enzyme responsible for platelets aggregation. Acetylsalicylic acid improves blood circulation: it acts as an antithrombotic and is used in stroke prevention. ASA is also commonly used during pregnancy to prevent or delay the onset of preeclampsia. Recent studies suggest a positive impact of ASA daily intake in cancer prevention.
