Overview

Sphingomyelin, a key component of cell membranes, is highly concentrated in nerve cell myelin sheaths and red blood cells. Initially thought to have only a structural role, it is now recognized for its affinity for cholesterol, forming lipid rafts that regulate protein signaling and localization. Additionally, sphingomyelin is a precursor to ceramides and other sphingolipid metabolites in the sphingomyelin cycle.
