Sphingosine (d20:1)

Overview

Sphingosines are long-chain base precursors of sphingolipids, directly involved in ceramide synthesis, which forms gangliosides with sialic acid. While sphingosine exists in four stereoisomers, only sphingosine occurs naturally. Unlike other sphingolipids, which are mostly C-18 sphingosine, CNS gangliosides contain notable amounts of sphingosine.
