Overview

Sphingomyelin is a major component of cell membranes, is highly concentrated in nerve cell myelin sheaths and red blood cells. Once thought to have a purely structural role, it is now known to interact with cholesterol, forming lipid rafts that regulate protein signaling and localization. Additionally, sphingomyelin is a precursor to ceramides and other sphingolipid metabolites in the sphingomyelin cycle.
