Overview

Sphingomyelin is a key component of cell membranes, especially in nerve cell myelin sheaths and red blood cells. Initially thought to have a structural role, sphingomyelin is now known to interact with cholesterol, forming tightly packed liquid-ordered domains, or lipid rafts, that regulate protein signaling. It also is a precursor to ceramides and other sphingolipid metabolites in the sphingomyelin cycle.
